We need to talk about the women-recast remake of The Mask.

My hottest of hot takes.

Take your Little Mermaid casting fury and direct it toward the real asshole of the film remake world: The female-led remake of The Mask.

I love The Mask. I’m a feminist. So this pisses me off for several reasons:

  1. The Mask is based on a graphic novel that interrogates the nature of selfishness when given absolute power. It was brilliantly re-interpreted as a funny send-up of noir films.

Changing the gender of the hero would cause so many story inconsistencies that it becomes a different story. Not to say I don’t want a woman Mask who drops lines from Bonnie and Clyde while shooting a gangster or openly ogles a gangster. In fact, now I really want that.

But that’s a completely different scene than “Gee baby, Ain’t I Good To You?” I don’t want to deny the cultural impact of a woman gone wild. Comparing it to masculinity gone wild cheapens both.
