Previous chapter.

Andy said she had to go talk to Mr. Fu after her meeting with Lady Six, so I didn’t think I’d see her the rest of the day. I found out later from Mom that she also went to be in her room alone for a while. I don’t know why she’d want to be alone for a long time after being alone in Time Out for hours. But whatever.

I knew Andy probably didn’t want to do anything for her birthday. But she’d been in Time Out so long I felt bad. So I made a cake after I finished the chores at the hospital.

Okay, it wasn’t a cake. It was a big brownie, but that was all I knew how to make by myself. I found some yellow frosting for it, so it still counted.

I knew she’d get off her Cabin Head rounds at eight. So I hung out by her room with it in a cake pan. I probably looked really stupid with it. But it would be a good surprise if it worked right.

“Rory, is that you?”

Andy was coming down the hall. She had a big ring of keys that unlocked any room in her cabin. It made noise whenever she took a step.
