The Incident that Convinced Me To Never Work While Sick.

The fine line between being responsible and stupid.

When you’re hurting for money, it’s hard to turn down any work.

But, as nature reminds us over and over again, we’re often the worst judges of what’s good for us at any given time.

If any part of us is deprived or just isn’t at it’s best, our decision-making abilities can go straight down the toilet.

When we’re vulnerable, that’s when we need to be even more prudent. Even more cautious about our decision making process. Even more aware of how much of a dumbass we can be.

With all that in mind, I came to a decision in 2017 that I would not ever work while sick.

It feels incredibly self-indulgent. Someone who works from home, with no commute, who can literally work in sweatpants and get away with it… why the heck wouldn’t you work when you were sick?

Because no matter how and why you work, your body is still working against you when you’re sick.

When I inevitably became sick with the stomach flu that terrorized Portland this fall, I did all the prerequisite sick care. I slept a lot. I took my elderberry lozenges. I was always under blankets.
