Mama John’s speech was beautiful, and I felt strange after listening to it. What was this group of people who wanted to use science to bring back the women of the world? Why was that so bad?

I’ve figured out some of the reasons in the years since those days, but the last one I still don’t fully know.

The best I can do is think about everyone’s attitudes at the time. I had heard of people using artificial wombs before, but that was only for really rich people who couldn’t have kids. I never knew anyone personally who used one, and I never heard of any girls being born that way.

In the year I’m writing this, everyone wants some solution to the lack of women. It’s still considered an unsolvable mystery, which is exactly why I need to write what I’m writing now. Context must be given.

I went back to sitting by Mr. Fu, who was considerably less grumpy but still testy. He asked me if I was ready to stop complaining about the heat, and I said yes. Most of what I said was “Yes, Mr. Fu” and “No, Mr. Fu.” My mind needed space to…
