Previous chapter.

I was twelve, and received my first sex education talk at school on the Friday before. Lots of eye-rolling from me, because it was all useless. Those changes wouldn’t be happening to my body. Mama John would tell me what I really needed to know on the holiday, when she’d be off from work and I’d be home for the night.

The bus I took from off-season baseball practice was nearly empty by the time I got off. We lived in the hillier region of town, nice enough to look over downtown but far enough that I didn’t always want to walk to school in the morning. The buses still ran regularly, so I figured I should take advantage of them even if Mr. Fu called me lazy.

That day, it seemed like everyone had left to visit family over the weekend. When I got off near the café two blocks from your apartment, there were maybe five people on the street. It was sunny, which was nice. But that only made everything feel more lonely.

I walked down the block, and I remember being surprised by how much the plants had grown around the buildings over the last year. Vines were now…
