The kids stopped talking for the majority of the ride, entertaining themselves by reading or staring out the window. We appeared to be heading straight north, as far as I could tell. Andy knew where we were going, at any rate.

As soon as Sparrow fell asleep in my lap, I leaned down and pressed a button that shut my pocket recorder off. I had about forty-five minutes of dead quiet at the end of that segment, but it was worth it.

These kids were here willingly. That alone was rocking my world. How had they joined up with Andy, then? She hadn’t kidnapped them, but had implied that they along had chosen to come with her. That implied they were part of a larger group.

“Andy?” I whispered. Most of the kids were asleep, and the clock on the dashboard read 9:52.

“Yeah?” She whispered back.

“Are we going straight to New York, or are we going to stop somewhere in between?”

“We’re going to stop in Raleigh, North Carolina. There’s a campsite I know that will work well for us stopping for a…
