Previous chapter.

I still remember waiting around with the press corps the night the Maskheads took me. It was summer in Florida, but the wind was unexpectedly cold. I was wearing a hoodie over a crop top to keep out the cold wind without sweat sticking to my clothes.

What’s funny is that I don’t even remember who I went with from the office. I know it was some guy who covered the regular crime beat. He was the one they trusted most with comped flights. I was the rookie, but I was allowed to travel for this thing. It was definitely a step up from the first research trip I ever did, which was one hundred percent by train. But that trip was where I had met Andy. It hadn’t been a complete waste of time.

I remember it feeling incredibly humid that night. I don’t have much tolerance for heat, so it was torture.

We couldn’t even go in the actual press section right away. I had almost no patience for that nonsense history tour one of the event assistants gave around the grounds. He was a pale hippie guy with long red hair, so I have no idea how he wasn’t sweating out of every pore…
