Previous chapter.

We all slept in the street that first night, leaning up against the walls of an alley. Not the same one we painted. We moved around looking for a good one to hide out in, avoiding people whenever possible.

It was a bad time all around. An evening of laying around doing nothing, trying to stay out of sight, and then sleeping. The temperature also dropped drastically once the sun went down. I’d slept on the street before, but it was when I was covering a political protest and everyone had tents. It was to protest the government shutting down Give, of all things. There wasn’t a risk of anyone actually getting killed.

Andy apologized to the kids over and over. She pulled out the sleeping bags and tried to make them all feel comfortable. She promised she’d figure something out, relay Home for help as soon as it was safe. And they believed her. But I could tell they still hated it. The big kids stuck together, the littler ones weaving in around them. Andy made a point of staying by Goggles, who leaned onto his pack as a pillow. I tried to stay away from the group as much as possible…
