Previous chapter.

Andy and I got out of the office in a dead rush, quicker than I ever thought we could. She didn’t take the gun off me once, not even when we passed out the service entrance to the van.

The kids were quiet when we got in, to no one’s surprise. Sparrow and Goggles were still sleeping, and the three other kids just stared at us without talking. Andy refilled the car from a jug of gasoline from the back, then we set off.

We didn’t have a set direction, so we headed south. I guess Andy figured we had all the time in the world to get to Washington D.C., so why not wander a little?

That’s just what I’m guessing Andy was thinking. She hasn’t talked much about that time period and neither have I. How could we talk about it? I was so ticked off at her for most of the trip. She was being reckless, and suddenly treating me like I was the enemy. This didn’t make any sense unless you knew that she was pregnant.

The kids didn’t know. That was the missing piece.
