The majority of my in-person friends do not own their own businesses. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Why? Because the vast majority of my business relationships are online. And honestly, it can be very hard to take it all seriously.

I know what you’re thinking.

Does she mean she doesn’t take her career seriously?

Is she one of those easy-breezy-anyone-can-do-it copywriters?

Is this a hit piece on how online life isn’t real life?

No, god no, and there’s way too many people talking about that already.

Online life is real life. I’m sorry to tell you this, but the you that you are online is the real you. Even if it’s a persona.

Especially if it’s a persona. It’s still rooted in some dark part of you that you may not want to acknowledge. But it’s still you. We all choose our masks knowingly.

It’s harder than most people think to shut off a part of yourself.

That’s why I’m glad I built an escape hatch for myself, via friendships with people who know barely anything about copy.

Occasionally we can talk about ads, which is great. My Mad Men nerdiness doesn’t shield me…
